I hate installing apps to save money, but this Pixel privacy feature makes it worthwhile

Prices at fast food chains, restaurants, and even grocery stores have spiraled out of control over the past couple of years. Luckily, not all hope is lost — if you’re a savvy shopper, you might know that the best way to save real money is to check for loyalty program discounts and limited-time offers. The only problem? Most of these offers require you to download each company’s app and check into them from time to time.

If installing a dozen different apps sounds like a privacy nightmare, I wholeheartedly agree. But luckily, I’ve found a way to use these apps without the downsides — and it’s all thanks to a Pixel feature that has existed since last October.

Here We Go is the non-Google map app I didn’t know I needed

Earlier this year, I started to become concerned about how much of my personal life was tied to the big tech companies, especially my Google account. And Google Maps was one of the biggest culprits. It had steadily changed from a clean and dependable navigation tool to a cluttered mess filled with ads. Worse, it sat at the heart of Google’s ecosystem and I knew I had to find a real alternative.

I wanted something different. I went looking for a navigation app that respected me as a user. It had to be simple, and didn’t require me to sign in with a Google account. That search led me to Here We Go, a map app from Europe that has a lot of what Google Maps offers but without all the drawbacks. So I gave it a test drive.

Libby introduces ‘Inspire Me’ to beef up your reading list

  • Libby will soon officially roll out a new AI-powered discovery tool called Inspire Me.
  • The feature suggests five titles based on saved books or selected prompts.
  • Some users and librarians are skeptical about privacy concerns and AI replacing human curation.

Libby, the popular library app for borrowing e-books and audiobooks, has introduced a new discovery tool called Inspire Me. The AI-powered feature offers five tailored recommendations based on a reader’s saved titles or selected prompts, surfacing books available to borrow right away.

In theory, the tool should streamline skimming your Libby app for book ideas. But not everyone is ready to hand over their reading list to an algorithm. Libby hopes Inspire Me will complement librarian-led discovery, but some users have already raised red flags. First, about the privacy concerns, but secondly, about the role of generative AI versus real, human experts. As one Redditor bluntly put it: “Thanks, but I’ll stick with my local librarian’s recommendations.” The skepticism reflects a broader hesitation about whether AI belongs in the library experience at all.

Samsung Messages rolls out ‘Bubble Emoji’ to put some personality into your texts

  • Samsung Messages has received a new feature.
  • The new feature will automatically add emojis to your text bubble.
  • The update has been released in South Korea.

The funny thing about Samsung Messages is that the texting app was going to be sunset. Or at least that’s what Samsung said at the beginning of the year when it decided to instead promote Google Messages. Yet, the tech giant has continued to support the app with new updates. The most recent update makes text bubbles a little more expressive.

Spotted by the folks over at SamMobile, Samsung has pushed out a new update for its Messages app. Before you get too excited, it appears this update has only been released in South Korea. The new feature in question is called Bubble Emoji, which you can see in the image shared by @herjy6372 on X (formerly Twitter).

Google Play Store is making the move to your Pixel 10 a bit less chaotic

  • The Play Store Downloads list now separates restored apps into a “From previous device” section during the setup process.
  • The change was spotted by a tipster while restoring apps on a Pixel 10 Pro XL.
  • It’s a small tweak that could make the transfer to a new device marginally less overwhelming.

If you’ve just picked up a new Pixel 10 or any other Android phone, you’ll know the chaos of transferring everything from your old handset. Restoring dozens or hundreds of apps through the Play Store can mean they end up jumbled together with app updates, making it hard to see what’s what as you set up your new device. But it seems that might be getting easier.

As spotted by Artem Russakovskii on X, the Play Store’s Downloads list is now split into two sections: “From previous device” and “Updates.” He noticed the change while restoring nearly 400 apps on his new Pixel 10 Pro XL, but it appears to be a Play Store tweak rather than a Pixel-specific feature.

  • The Google Play Store will now show warnings on Wear OS watch face listings that may drain battery life.
  • Watch faces with heavy animations, dynamic data, or constant phone interaction are the likely culprits.
  • The update is rolling out, but we haven’t spotted it yet on our Galaxy Watch 8.

Google is adding a small but handy feature to the Play Store on Wear OS watches. With the latest Play Store version 47.7 update, users will now see warning messages on the detail pages of watch face apps that could negatively impact battery life.

Not all watch faces are created equal. Some are lightweight and efficient, while others, especially those with complex animations, live data, or heavy phone interactions, can seriously hog the battery life of your smartwatch. Until now, most users had no easy way to know which was which, often leading to short battery life after installing a flashy new watch face.

Samsung’s latest ‘no shirt’ ad trolls iPhones for lacking intelligence and a fold

  • Samsung has released an ad poking fun at iPhones for lacking AI features and the ability to fold.
  • It’s no secret that Apple Intelligence has struggled to keep pace with Galaxy AI or Google’s Gemini.
  • Samsung leans right into that weakness in the ad spot titled “A Real Upgrade.”

Samsung and Google have been tag-teaming lately, poking fun at iPhones for being less “smart” than Galaxy phones and Pixels. Google has its snarky BestPhonesForever campaign, while Samsung has made a sport out of mocking Apple whenever it rolls out new devices. Riding high on the buzz around its latest foldables, Samsung has now dropped a new ad on social media to troll Apple for still lacking both an intelligent AI assistant and a foldable iPhone.

Apple accuses Android brand of trade secret theft over wearables (Update: Response)

Apple has accused OPPO of obtaining trade secrets from an ex-employee

  • Apple is suing OPPO, accusing the company of stealing Apple Watch trade secrets through a former employee.
  • Engineer Chen Shi allegedly downloaded 63 confidential files and shared research details with OPPO before leaving Apple.
  • OPPO has since issued a statement in response to the lawsuit.

Update: August 25, 2025 (1:07 AM ET): OPPO has now issued an official statement addressing Apple’s legal filing against it and a former Apple employee.

The company posted the following in an email to Android Authority:

Notion’s offline mode might just make me ditch Obsidian

Notion is one of my favorite tools. From databases to to-do lists, tracking restaurants I wanted to check out, and so much more, I’ve dabbled in it for years until I finally made the switch to Obsidian. That’s mostly because of Notion’s one fatal flaw. The moment you lose internet, the app effectively becomes useless.

The moment you lose internet, the app effectively becomes useless.

I’ve learned that the hard way on flights, cafes with rocky Wi-Fi, even when wanting to check a washing machine’s maintenance schedule in my basement laundry without a cellular signal. It’s what pushed me towards Obsidian, a local-first markdown-based app that has never failed me when I just needed access to my notes. For a very long time now, Obsidian has been my safety net. But now that Notion has finally fixed that fatal flaw by rolling out offline mode, it might be time for a rethink. Perhaps it’s time to ditch Obsidian and go back to Notion. Here’s why.

Did AYANEO just announce the first Snapdragon 8 Elite gaming handheld?

  • AYANEO just teased the KONKR Pocket FIT Elite, which may have a Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC.
  • It would be the first gaming handheld with that chipset, which offers far more power than anything on the market.
  • It will start at less than $399, with a Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 variant starting at less than $329.

This week has been crazy for gaming handhelds, with two new dual-screen devices dropping at exceptionally competitive prices. This morning, at a sharing session for the first device from AYANEO’s new budget-minded sub-brand KONKR, the company dropped another bombshell: The KONKR Pocket FIT Elite.

Now, the Pocket FIT was revealed earlier this month to have a 6-inch 144Hz LCD panel and the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 chipset, which is already the most powerful processor on any handheld we’ve seen so far. It follows the SUGAR 1 and AYANEO Pocket S2, both of which had absolutely incredible performance in our testing.
