TL;DR

  • Google has quietly started rolling out Gemini for Android Auto.
  • It appears beta testers are the first users gaining access to the AI assistant.
  • It’s unclear which version of Android Auto Gemini is rolling out on.

During an earnings call in April, Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed that Gemini would replace Google Assistant in vehicles that connect to phones later in the year. Since then, Android Auto users have been eagerly waiting for the upgrade. After all of the months of waiting, Gemini is finally starting to roll out for some Android Auto users.

Apple is paying Google $1bn to upgrade Siri with… Gemini

TL;DR

  • Apple is reportedly ready to pay Google $1 billion per year to develop and maintain a specialized AI model.
  • This special version of the Gemini model will be used to power the next generation of Siri.
  • This represents Apple’s desperation to enter the AI race, especially with its inability to build a model comparable to Google’s Gemini.

Voice assistants from tech brands like Google and Amazon have recently undergone significant enhancements powered by AI. Both Alexa+ and Gemini, which has replaced Google Assistant, are now available to users for testing and critique. In the meantime, Apple’s ambitions to catch up to its competitors with Siri continue to drag on. Facing challenges in developing a conversational AI chatbot over the past several months, Apple reportedly considered partnering with other AI companies, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, and was later believed to have chosen a partner.

Over the weekend, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that with the expected timeline for releasing a revamped Siri drawing closer, Apple has decided to use Gemini to power Siri’s next generation. In a more recent update, Gurman shares additional details about the deal, including Apple’s plans to pay $1 billion annually to Google for deploying an AI model to power up Siri.

Galaxy S26 Ultra cameras leak: Were you really expecting major upgrades?

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra CAD render

TL;DR

  • A leaker has posted apparent camera sensor details for the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.
  • The phone is said to retain all its camera sensors except for the 3x shooter, which will apparently increase from 10MP to 12MP.
  • This news also comes as rival phone makers bring major camera hardware upgrades.

Samsung‘s flagship phones don’t have a reputation for cutting-edge camera hardware compared to rivals. Earlier Galaxy S26 Ultra leaks suggest that we won’t see massive changes this time, either, and a leaker has now corroborated these claims.

  • Google and Epic Games have proposed a settlement to resolve their five-year-long legal dispute over the Play Store’s alleged monopolization of user choice and in-app purchases.
  • Both companies have jointly filed the proposed settlement with the court.
  • Under the proposal, Google will allow greater flexibility for developers to distribute apps and process payments outside of Google Play, thereby also expanding choices for Play Store users.

Google and Epic Games may finally be close to ending their long-running legal dispute over the Play Store. Both companies have jointly filed a proposed settlement with the court, which could bring about big changes to how Android and Google Play operate in the US.

Qualcomm’s next flagship chip might come in two flavors, just to complicate things further?

TL;DR

  • Qualcomm is rumored to launch its next flagship chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, in two tiers: Standard and Pro.
  • The Pro version may offer faster LPDDR6 RAM, higher GPU clocks, and stronger AI performance, while the Standard could dial things back for affordability.
  • This naming split could help shoppers pick based on needs, but also risks confusing buyers who assume all “Gen 6” phones are equal.

Qualcomm has just introduced its latest flagship chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and it’s already powering many upcoming Android heavy-hitters. But even with that release still fresh, rumors about its successor are gaining momentum. The next high-end processor, expected to launch as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, may arrive in two distinct tiers: a Standard version and a more powerful Pro variant.

  • YouTube TV says it can reinstate Disney’s channels “within hours” if Disney agrees to do so.

YouTube TV has emailed Disney, proposing to restore both ABC and ESPN networks while negotiations between the two companies continue. The move comes after Disney requested that Google temporarily restore ABC on YouTube TV for Election Day coverage in the public interest.

The Android IRS: How Google once tried to tax battery-sucking background apps

There are three things that are certain in life: death, taxes, and Google restricting background work. With every new Android release, Google seemingly further restricts what apps running in the background can do. This is understandable because battery power is a finite commodity on Android phones, so allowing apps to do whatever they want whenever they want would be detrimental to battery life. To prevent rogue applications from draining your phone’s battery, the Android OS implements a number of battery management tactics to control when apps can run and how long they can run.

Apps that need to perform critical, real-time tasks like downloading a file, tracking a run, or playing music can create a foreground service, but in order to do so, they must show a notification so users are aware. Instead of creating a foreground service, Google recommends most developers use APIs like JobScheduler and AlarmManager (or a higher-level wrapper, like WorkManager) to queue tasks in the background.

YouTube execs flat-out deny claims Biden admin pushed for censorship

TL;DR

  • Back in September, Alphabet blamed YouTube censorship policies on pressure from the Biden administration.
  • Numerous YouTube executives have given testimony that directly rebuts that claim.
  • Now Committee on the Judiciary ranking member Jamie Raskin is demanding answers.

The past ten months have got to be the start of one of the most embarrassing years for tech heavyweights in recent memory. One after the other, firms like Apple, Meta, NVIDIA, Microsoft, Amazon, and of course, Google, have been prostrating themselves before a government administration they’d previously butted heads with. But in 2025, acquiescence is the name of the game, and rather than bracing for another four years of conflict, they’ve instead been kissing the ring.

A few weeks back, that extended to YouTube performing a massive about-face on the necessary steps it had taken to ban some of the worst voices on its platform, spreading lies, hate, and disinformation — instead opening the door to restore their access. That move was telegraphed in late September when Alphabet legal counsel submitted a letter to the House Committee on the Judiciary, blaming COVID-era YouTube moderation policies on pressure the company had received from the Biden administration.

Here’s how you can score a Mint Mobile plan for just $10 per month

Mint Mobile has made a name for itself as one of the most recognizable prepaid carriers in the US, thanks in part to Ryan Reynolds’ ads and its simple approach to mobile plans. It runs on the T-Mobile network, but as an MVNO, it already undercuts the big three networks by a wide margin. However, a new offer that you won’t see advertised on the site makes its 12-month plans even cheaper.

For a limited time, new customers can get 30% off all 12-month fixed-data plans using the code YEAROFMINT. That drops the 5GB plan from $15 to $10.50 per month, paid upfront for the year. The code should automatically apply if you use this link or widget below, but it’s worth noting down just in case.

  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said that the next version of ChatGPT, i.e., ChatGPT 6, will be renamed ChatGPT 6-7.
  • While Altman may be joking, “6 7” has actually been crowned as the Word of the Year 2025.

In a perfectly timed post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that the next version of ChatGPT — ChatGPT 6 — will apparently be called “GPT 6-7.” If you’re not a parent of a school-aged kid, you might be scratching your head right about now. But in the wonderfully bizarre times we live in, “6 7” has officially been crowned Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year 2025.
