The Pixel 10 Pro Fold isn’t as slick as my Galaxy Z Fold 7, but I envy it for these reasons

Opinion post by
Adamya Sharma

A lot of people seem to be dunking on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold for being a little too thick around the edges. And it’s true, next to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, Google’s latest foldable may not look nearly as elegant or futuristic. The company clearly wasn’t chasing thinness like the rest of the players in the foldable game, and the result is a foldable phone that looks chunkier and is even a tad heavier than its predecessor. However, Google’s lack of attention to the size of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is actually starting to make a lot of sense to me. It’s even making me a bit jealous, to be honest.

The trade-offs are tough to ignore once you look closer.

During our press briefings, Google was very upfront about why it didn’t slim down the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and the trade-offs are tough to ignore once you look closer. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold packs a 5,015mAh battery compared to the Fold 7’s 4,400mAh cell. That’s not just a small bump, it’s a massive leap for a foldable phone, and one that could easily translate into a few extra hours of real-world usage. If you’ve used a foldable phone before, you would know that battery life is one of the first sacrifices you have to learn to live with for the sake of the form factor, and while the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s battery life isn’t bad, Google is essentially taking things to the next level with that added capacity. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see how the new Tensor G5 chip performs in practice, and what kind of toll it might take on battery life.

Two smart ring brands will no longer be available to US shoppers

  • This morning, Oura won its ongoing legal battle against Ultrahuman and RingConn at the ITC.
  • Both rivals are now banned from selling smart rings in the US.
  • The ruling all but cements Oura’s dominance in the US market.

The smart ring market in the US just got leaner. Today, Oura, maker of the Oura Ring, won a decisive legal battle that blocks two of its biggest rivals, Ultrahuman and RingConn, from selling their devices stateside. The International Trade Commission (ITC) found both companies infringed on Oura’s patents and hit them with exclusion and cease-and-desist orders.

Oura already leads the US smart ring market by a wide margin. The company has shipped more than 2.5 million devices globally and remains the most recognizable brand in the category. Ultrahuman and RingConn have recently offered some competition, appealing to buyers with lower prices and different hardware designs. We even dubbed the RingConn Gen Air 2 the best budget smart ring available and a worthwhile challenge to the Oura Ring. With the ITC ruling, the market’s variety disappears overnight.

Google’s mysterious new smart speaker could offer spatial surround sound

New Nest Speaker Made By Google

  • The mysterious smart speaker that appeared during Made by Google is a real, unannounced device.
  • The speaker is said to come with Gemini installed.
  • Users will reportedly be able to pair it with a Google TV Streamer.

If you watched yesterday’s Made by Google event and thought you saw an unfamiliar piece of hardware, you weren’t imagining things. A device that looks like a mix between an Apple HomePod Mini and an Amazon Echo Dot briefly appeared in the stream. As it turns out, this was a teaser for a new smart speaker, and a new report has details on the unannounced device.

According to Android Headlines, this bulbous speaker will be available in a range of four colors: bright red, a light green, black, and white. Considering the tech giant’s naming conventions, these colors will probably go by the names Obsidian, Porcelain, and Jade. It’s unclear what name Google could give the bright red shade.

Google finally lets you customize icon shapes on your Pixel’s home screen

  • You can now customize icon shapes on your Pixel Launcher’s home screen.
  • Android will give you five options. Including the default circle, there’s square, four-sided cookie, seven-sided cookie, and arch.
  • These options are currently only available in the August 2025 Android Canary release, but we expect it won’t be long before they make their way into the QPR2 track.

Hot off the heels of the Pixel 10 launch, Google unveiled a new Android Canary release. The August 2025 Android Canary update rolled out today to users enrolled in the Canary program, and it finally brings a long-awaited personalization option: the ability to customize icon shapes on the home screen. While the new version doesn’t let you create your own icon shape, it does let you choose from five delightful presets, one of which will definitely suit your fancy.

After installing the latest Canary release and opening the Wallpaper & Style app, developer Kieron Quinn noticed that the “Icons” menu had changed. Instead of only having a toggle to enable icon theming, the “Icons” menu now has several icon shape options. These include the default circle shape as well as new square, four-sided cookie, seven-sided cookie, and arch options.

Android finally lets you control your Pixel phone’s flashlight brightness

  • Android has finally added native flashlight brightness controls from the Quick Settings panel.
  • Google added support for controlling the flashlight brightness in Android 13, but there was no way to do so from Quick Settings.
  • This feature is available in the latest August 2025 Android Canary release and may arrive in Android 16 QPR2.

If you’re looking for something under a couch, bed, or other dimly lit area, then your phone’s built-in flashlight will come in handy. Nearly every phone has one, including every Google Pixel device. Unlike other devices, though, Pixels don’t let you adjust the brightness of the flashlight from the Quick Settings panel. That’s thankfully changed in the new August 2025 Android Canary release that Googel rolled out today.

After installing the new Canary release, I noticed that the flashlight tile was now expandable. Tapping it opened a dialog named “Flashlight Strength” that had a slider and buttons to turn off the flashlight or confirm the brightness level.

Google’s upcoming Made by Google 2025 event is shaping up to be more of a late-night show than a tech keynote. The company previously confirmed that Jimmy Fallon would appear at the big launch in Brooklyn, New York, on August 20. Now, Fallon has appeared in a YouTube Short confirming he’ll host the Pixel 10 launch event, marking the first time Google has tapped a celebrity host for its hardware showcase.

This open-source fasting app actually helped me hit my fitness goals

Opinion post by
Dhruv Bhutani

I was never an athletic kid, and that continued through most of my 20s. That is, until I decided to change things up, drop some weight, and focus more on my health. Intermittent fasting was a big part of that journey, and I’ve been following it for several years now. In fact, it’s the one constant in my wellness journey that has actually stuck with me. Much as I’ve dabbled with workout plans, picked up the best fitness trackers, tracked macros with obsessive detail, and even experimented with sleep optimization, it’s the 16:8 fasting approach that has been the most sustainable thing I’ve done for my health. Ironically, what hasn’t been sustainable is finding a fasting app that doesn’t eventually go down the usual rabbit hole of ads and subscriptions. Trust me, I’ve tried them all.

While most fasting and fitness apps start out helpful, the core experience very quickly gets buried under microtransactions and basic features locked behind paywalls. Curious about what fasting zone you’re in? You’d better be prepared to pony up some cash. Everything from custom fasting windows to simple insights that used to be free is suddenly a premium feature. And don’t get me started on the notification spam every time I open the app. Look, I just need a glorified stopwatch. I don’t need your app to support a full-fledged wellness program and the accompanying fees. So I did what any self-respecting tech enthusiast would do: I looked at open-source solutions to the problem.

5 reasons I swapped Google Keep for this open-source app

As a journalist and avid enthusiast of productivity apps, I’ve used more note-taking apps than I care to admit. Google Keep, OneNote, SimpleNote, and a pretty wide assortment of open-source tools have all been a part of my note-taking arsenal at one point or another. To be sure, some of these were excellent, some less so, while others like Google Keep and OneNote begrudgingly became a key part of my workflow.

Google Keep, in particular, has been a constant companion for its simplicity, quick note-taking, and wide web-based availability. Despite its relatively limited feature set, the colorful sticky note format feels like an extension of the dozen or more sticky notes plastered on my work desk. But as my note-taking needs have grown more complex, Keep’s limitations just can’t, ahem, keep up.

Pairing your Galaxy Watch with a non-Samsung phone? Here’s what you’re missing out on

Samsung’s smartwatches (and the Galaxy Ring) are compatible with most Android phones, but you’ll only get the full experience when paired with Samsung Galaxy smartphones. This applies to older Galaxy Watch models up to the latest Galaxy Watch 8 series and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2025. But what are these features, and are they worth considering switching smartphones for?

There are many features, but only a few truly make the partnership worthwhile, at least for me. I don’t own a Galaxy Ring, but I can comment on the synergy between my Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy S24 FE. While most benefits are health-related, several ecosystem features make owning Samsung products more attractive and worth considering.

Google’s next big Android release is coming with these AI tools and UWB features

Last year, Google announced it was accelerating Android’s release schedule. In the past, Google typically rolled out a single Android release each year with new APIs for developers. Starting in 2025, however, the company is moving to two such releases annually: one major and one minor. We’ve already received this year’s major release with the stable Android 16 update in June, and the upcoming Android 16 QPR2 update will be the first minor one. Here are some of the new features we think Google will release in Android 16 QPR2.
