With US carrier price hikes, I believe prepaid services are the way forward for most US consumers

Getting postpaid phone service in the US has never been particularly affordable, but the situation has worsened dramatically since the pandemic. Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T have not only increased the listed prices of their plans, but the amount of extra fees has also seemingly risen. We’ve also seen changes like the removal of perks or extra charges for them, and older grandfathered plans have seen price changes. While T-Mobile initially avoided price hikes, even the uncarrier has changed its tune by raising prices on its legacy plans.

All of this leads me to a conclusion: most of us shouldn’t stay with the Big Three anymore. It just isn’t worth it except for a small minority. Prepaid is a better route for most. While prepaid carriers have also seen some price rises, the increases have been at a much slower rate. We’ve even seen a few carriers like Mint Mobile lower their pricing in response to recent carrier hikes.

  • Microsoft has released a new feature for beta users.
  • The update adds a new “My Phone” icon in Windows Share.
  • Tapping the icon will allow users to easily share content from their PC to their Android phone.

There are plenty of ways to send and receive files between your PC and Android phone. For example, Google’s Quick Share feature allows users to quickly share files from their phones to their PCs wirelessly and vice versa. Now Microsoft is offering a new way to make this process easier.

Microsoft announced it is rolling out an update to its Windows 11 beta channel. Members who are a part of the Insiders program will see a new “My Phone” search icon in Windows Share when attempting to share content. Clicking on this icon will allow you to quickly send your content over to your Android phone with little hassle.

  • A new leak may have revealed renders of the Galaxy S24 FE.
  • The FE model appears to heavily resemble the Galaxy S24.
  • The handset is said to have an AMOLED display and 50MP main camera.

Ever since Samsung skipped the Galaxy S22 FE, it is not guaranteed that every new Galaxy series will be followed up by a Fan Edition. Last year, the tech giant did release an S23 FE, there have also been rumors about a S24 FE. But today’s news makes everything a little more concrete with leaked renders of this year’s FE model.

In collaboration with well-known tipster OnLeaks, Giznext managed to obtain leaked renders of what’s claimed to be the Galaxy S24 FE. In the images below, you can see a handset that has identical design language to the vanilla S24 flagship. One factor that stands out, however, is the chin which features a thicker bezel.

I’ve looked at thousands of phone wallpapers, here are my absolute favorites

samsung galaxy note 10 plus star wars edition home screen wallpaper

Being one of the “wallpaper guys,” my eyes have marveled over some of the best phone wallpapers in existence, and also some of the worst. The thing about finding great wallpapers is that it’s like finding a needle in a haystack, or a hay mountain. The internet is flooded with so many options. I’ve worked here at Android Authority for over nine years, so I’ve seen thousands of wallpapers. Today, I’m taking on the challenge of finding the very best ones I’ve ever seen.

Of course, we can’t cover all user-created, custom, AI, or third-party wallpapers out there. For the sake of simplicity, and to accomplish a better curated collection, we’ll stick to wallpapers that came with smartphones. We’ll include images from companies like Google, Samsung, Motorola, etc.

  • Motorola will reportedly launch its 2024 foldable smartphones in early July.
  • The Moto Razr 2024 is expected to feature a larger cover display and switch to a MediaTek processor.
  • The Moto Razr Plus 2024 is expected to run on the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset and feature an upgraded camera setup.

Motorola is changing things up this year by delaying the launch of its 2024 foldable smartphones. Unlike last year, when the Moto Razr 2023 and Moto Razr Plus 2023 were announced on June 1, there has been no announcement for this year’s models yet.

According to a report from SmartPrix, the Moto Razr 2024 and Moto Razr Plus 2024 (known as the Moto Razr 50 and Razr 50 Ultra outside of the US) are now set to be unveiled in early July, with global availability following soon after.

  • YouTube has revealed a series of feature tests its currently running.
  • These YouTube tests aren’t available to everyone, and it’s specified these are only accessible to small groups of people.
  • We’re not sure when these features will launch to the public, or if they will at all.

YouTube continues improving to keep its position as the second most visited website in the world, only beaten by Google.com. The video juggernaut is constantly evolving, testing features through YouTube feature experiments, allowing small groups of people to check them out before these capabilities reach the general public. The latest ones are looking especially interesting. Let’s go over some of the coolest ones together.

Note: These are experimental being tested. Such experiments don’t always make it to the general public, as there is a chance these upgrades may be canceled.

The HONOR Magic V Flip brings a gorgeous design and super competitive price

HONOR Magic V Flip

Credit: HONOR China
  • The HONOR Magic V Flip has launched in China with a starting price of 4,999 yuan, equivalent to about $689 USD.
  • It comes with a large 4-inch external screen, the largest in its class.
  • The HONOR Magic V Flip is a fashion-focused smartphone with available accessories and a relatively low price point.

Every now and then, I see a smartphone that makes me totally jealous of people in China. Such is the case with the brand-new HONOR Magic V Flip, which officially launched in China today, June 13th. And get this: it was announced at a technology fashion show. Of course, this tells us a bit about the device’s nature.

HONOR has put a big focus on design with the Magic V Flip, and you can tell from the get-go. It is a gorgeous foldable phone. For starters, it is very thin at 7.15mm when unfolded, or 14.89mm when folded shut. It weighs 193g. The frame is curved and the device is available in three colors: black, white, and pink. These are not your typical colors, though. The black and white versions look almost pearl-like, and the pink one has a very unique pattern. All look more elegant and refined than most smartphones, and there’s also a special edition that is green and glittery.

Apple Watch can finally track your sleep automatically, with watch OS 11

  • Apple’s latest watchOS brings automatic sleep tracking to users’ wrists.
  • Thanks to the update, users no longer need to be in sleep focus to track key overnight metrics or naps.
  • This is just one of many upgrades to the ecosystem’s health tracking suite, including a new Vitals app.

Sleep is one of the most popular health metrics eagerly tracked by smartwatch users, and for some time, Apple Watches have been frustratingly behind the ball. Specifically, the devices would not track sleep unless utilizing Apple’s Sleep Focus mode. Now however, watchOS 11 makes it possible for users to automatically track sleep regardless of what mode their device is in.

  • Users are reporting that their Roku TV’s motion smoothing is automatically enabled with no way to turn it off.
  • The issue seems to have started after the Roku OS 13 update on certain TCL TV models.
  • It is speculated that the issue may be linked to Roku’s new Smart Picture feature.

Owners of TCL TVs running on Roku OS are facing an unexpected problem after a recent software update. According to multiple online reports, the recent Roku OS 13 update has triggered an unwelcome side effect for some users: the dreaded “soap opera effect.” (h/t: The Verge)

The issue has sparked a flurry of complaints on Roku’s community forums and Reddit, with TCL TV owners reporting that the motion smoothing effect is suddenly present even when they haven’t actively enabled it in their settings. Adding to the frustration, some users claim that this is the first time their TVs have even offered the motion smoothing feature, and they are unable to locate any options to turn it off.

The Risks of Sharing Business Data with AI

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve and integrate into various business operations, companies are increasingly relying on AI to enhance efficiency, improve decision-making, and gain competitive advantages. However, with these benefits come significant risks associated with sharing business data with AI. It is crucial for organizations to understand and mitigate these risks to protect their assets, maintain customer trust, and comply with regulatory requirements.

1. Data Privacy and Security

Data Breaches

Sharing business data with AI systems often involves storing and processing vast amounts of sensitive information. This increases the risk of data breaches, which can occur due to vulnerabilities in the AI system itself, the infrastructure supporting it, or through cyber-attacks. Unauthorized access to business data can lead to financial loss, reputational damage, and legal liabilities.

Privacy Concerns

AI systems frequently process personal data to generate insights and predictions. Mishandling or improper storage of this data can lead to privacy violations. Businesses must ensure that their AI systems comply with data protection regulations such as GDPR and CCPA to avoid hefty fines and legal repercussions.

2. Bias and Discrimination

Algorithmic Bias

AI systems learn from the data they are trained on. If this data contains biases, the AI can perpetuate and even amplify these biases in its decision-making processes. For instance, biased hiring algorithms can result in discriminatory hiring practices. Identifying and mitigating such biases is challenging but essential to ensure fairness and ethical use of AI.

Discrimination Risks

AI systems can inadvertently discriminate against certain groups based on race, gender, age, or other characteristics. This can lead to unequal treatment of employees or customers, creating ethical and legal issues for the business. Companies must regularly audit their AI systems to detect and address any discriminatory patterns.

3. Intellectual Property and Confidentiality

Loss of Proprietary Information

When sharing business data with third-party AI service providers, there is a risk of losing control over proprietary information. This could lead to unauthorized use or disclosure of trade secrets and other confidential data, undermining the company’s competitive edge.

Data Ownership

Determining the ownership of data and any derived insights can be complex when using AI services. Businesses must clearly define data ownership and usage rights in their contracts with AI providers to avoid potential disputes and ensure they retain control over their valuable data assets.

4. Operational and Strategic Risks

Over-reliance on AI

Businesses that become overly reliant on AI systems for critical operations may face significant disruptions if these systems fail or produce inaccurate results. It is essential to maintain a balance between human oversight and automated processes to ensure business continuity and resilience.

Strategic Misalignment

AI systems are designed to optimize specific tasks based on available data. However, they may not always align with the broader strategic goals of the business. Relying on AI for strategic decision-making without human judgment can lead to misaligned priorities and missed opportunities.

5. Compliance and Regulatory Challenges

Regulatory Compliance

AI systems must comply with various industry-specific regulations and standards. Non-compliance can result in legal penalties and damage to the business’s reputation. Companies need to stay updated on regulatory changes and ensure their AI systems are compliant to avoid potential legal issues.

Ethical Concerns

The ethical use of AI is increasingly under scrutiny. Businesses must ensure that their AI applications do not exploit customers or employees and are used in a manner consistent with ethical standards. Transparent AI practices and clear communication with stakeholders are vital to maintaining trust and integrity.

Conclusion

While AI offers significant benefits to businesses, the risks associated with sharing business data with AI cannot be overlooked. Companies must implement robust data protection measures, regularly audit their AI systems for bias and discrimination, clearly define data ownership and usage rights, and ensure compliance with regulatory and ethical standards. By proactively addressing these risks, businesses can harness the power of AI while safeguarding their data, reputation, and long-term success.

AI integration into iPhones raises data security concerns for X

Apple Inc. has officially announced at the WWDC conference that future iPhone models will be integrated with Artificial Intelligence, specifically ChatGPT, which is owned by OpenAI, now a subsidiary of Microsoft. However, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has expressed security concerns regarding this integration. He has warned that he will ban the use of Apple devices on his business premises if the decision is not reversed or reconsidered by Apple, which plans to release iOS 18 with this new feature.

Musk’s warning includes a stipulation that if Apple integrates AI technology into its smartphones, all visitors and employees at his office premises will have to leave their Apple devices at the entrance.

This action could escalate and potentially prohibit Apple device users from accessing services related to X, Tesla, and SpaceX if Apple proceeds with integrating ChatGPT into Siri, its voice assistant.

Meanwhile, there is an urgent advisory circulating, suggesting that iPhone users should delay updating their devices to iOS 18. The beta version has reportedly failed on many test platforms due to bugs causing operational errors in text notifications, battery life, iCloud photo storage, and the app lock and hide feature.

Some Reddit enthusiasts noted that issues with the iOS 18 beta version surfaced after Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter (now X), issued his warning about the AI integration with iPhone devices.

These developments began to unfold after Apple unveiled iOS 18 at the Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco earlier this week.

For your information, Musk, who co-founded OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, left the project due to concerns that AI technology could be detrimental to humanity. Since then, he has periodically voiced his concerns about advancements in Artificial Intelligence.

With his latest warning to ban iPhones on all his business premises, Musk’s serious concerns about AI have become evident to the world.

Android 15’s spaceship Easter egg now has a new flaggy twist

  • Google is updating Android’s latest Easter egg game, which has you fly a spaceship around, to now plant flags when you land on a planet.
  • Amusingly, this update is currently hidden behind a feature flag, meaning it’s a flag for flags.
  • Apart from this change, it doesn’t look like Android 15 will change the spaceship Easter egg game much, which was first introduced in Android 14.

Whenever Google launches a new version of the Android operating system, they like to sneak in a fun little Easter egg. These Android Easter eggs usually take the form of a bite-sized game (like the full-on Flappy Bird clone in Android 5.0) or a tool that relates to some major feature of the new OS version (like Cat Controls in Android 11). While the spaceship Easter egg in the upcoming Android 15 update is largely unchanged from the previous release, it does have one tiny change: Your ship now plants a flag on any planets you land on.

If you have a phone or tablet running Android 14, you can play Android’s hidden spaceship game right now. We’ve documented what the Android 14 Easter egg does before if you’re interested, but basically, you pilot a ship while looking for celestial bodies orbiting a star, strewn across the vast expanse of space. You can tap on the screen to control the direction of the ship, or you can tap and drag your finger to change its velocity. Your ship’s position and velocity are overlaid at the bottom left of the screen, while information relating to the closest star is overlaid at the top left.

T-Mobile has removed the safest way to secure your account

  • Users are reporting that T-Mobile has removed 2FA support for Google Authenticator.
  • There is no official statement from T-Mobile yet.

With hackers and scammers becoming much more sophisticated, our only option is to increase our security measures. This is why it’s odd to see T-Mobile removing support for an important security measure. Especially considering that all other companies are adding security features, not removing them.

Phone Arena has discovered a couple of Reddit threads that have surfaced (this one and this one), teeming with upset T-Mobile subscribers worried about their account security. It seems T-Mobile has removed support for Google Authenticator, leaving customers with SMS messages as their only option for 2FA.

With iOS 18, iPhone’s dialer will finally get the most basic smartphone feature

  • Apple will introduce T9 dialing to the iPhone dialer with the iOS 18 update.
  • T9 dialing allows users to type a contact’s name using the number pad, instantly suggesting matching contacts.
  • Until now, users have had to type in phone numbers or search for contacts through the Contacts app to make calls.

Apple’s WWDC announcements about iOS 18 mainly revolved around Apple Intelligence and the company’s implementation of AI in its core products. The feature that got me the most excited was that iOS 18 is finally bringing T9 dialing to iPhones. Is this a sign that I’m getting old? Maybe. But am I still thrilled about it? Absolutely.

What is T9 dialing?

T9, short for “Text on 9 keys,” is a predictive text technology that revolutionized typing in the pre-smartphone era. With T9, users could type in English words using a numeric keypad by pressing a single key for each letter (instead of having to multi-tap numbers to register letters), and the software would intelligently predict the word.

  • The iOS 18 wallpapers are here to download and use on your Android phone.
  • There are two wallpapers: one ideal for light mode and another ideal for dark mode.
  • Please download them from the Drive link to ensure you get the high-res versions.

Today, Apple officially launched iOS 18, the latest software version powering iPhones. iOS 18 is now rolling out in beta form to supported iPhones (pretty much everything after the 2018 iPhone XS is supported). If you’re brave enough to download it, you’ll get treated to two new iOS 18 wallpapers, among all the new features Apple announced today.

However, installing the beta is risky business. We are already hearing reports of lots of problems, including overheating, disappearing icons, and more.
