Competition breeds innovation, but saying that the Android smartwatch market has stagnated would be an understatement. Between Fossil exiting the game and limited options from the likes of Mobvoi, the Android smartwatch market is, by and large, a two-horse race between Samsung and Google. So I was particularly excited for the arrival of the OnePlus Watch 2 as a potential contender for the best Wear OS watch crown.

Despite its limitations, the watch is setting a new benchmark regarding battery life, innovative dual-OS tech, and, arguably, design. More importantly, the broader availability of this watch is very appealing.

Apple pulls the plug on in-house MicroLED display for the Apple Watch

  • A new report claims Apple has ended its initiative to develop MicroLED smartwatch displays in-house.
  • Apple reportedly canceled the project after finding the displays too complex and costly to develop.
  • In-house MicroLED displays would have allowed Apple to decrease its reliance on suppliers like Samsung.

Rumors have suggested that Apple was internally preparing MicroLED displays for its future smartwatches, like the Apple Watch X. However, that possibility appears to have ended as a new report claims the Cupertino firm has shut down development.

According to Bloomberg, Apple has reportedly halted its work on smartwatch MicroLED screens. It appears this decision was made around the same time the company decided to give up on its self-driving car, which was reported on back in late February.

Here’s a first look at Gemini in Google Messages (Update: Google clarifies features)

  • A news outlet has given us a good look at the Gemini assistant in Google Messages.
  • The assistant is able to make place recommendations, generate code, create images, and more within Messages.
  • Later, a Google spokesperson gave us more information on the feature as well as clarifying some confusion.

Update, March 22, 2024 (04:17 PM ET): After publishing the original article below, a Google spokesperson reached out to us to clarify some details. We have left the original article unedited, but do note these updates:

Android 15 DP2 delivers built-in app archiving for more storage freedom

  • Built-in app archiving is live in the Android 15 Developer Preview 2.
  • App archiving will let users archive their apps from Android’s settings.
  • Users will be able to choose if they want the OS to automatically archive their unused apps.

Android 15 Developer Preview 2 has introduced a bevy of new features, ranging from audio sharing to satellite connectivity support and much more. Included among that list is built-in app archiving, and it is available in the preview right now.

Back in February, we reported there was code in an Android beta that suggested Google could add baked-in app archiving. Earlier this month, we were able to activate this feature and show how it works. Now anyone can start using the app archiving feature if they have Android 15 Developer Preview 2 installed.

Android 15 is fixing one of the worst parts of the Pixel’s webcam feature

  • Android 15 could fix USB webcam video quality by adding a dedicated High Quality Mode.
  • This is an update to the plug-and-play webcam feature added in Android 14 QPR1.
  • While the feature has been convenient to use, the video quality is pretty mediocre, so this is a welcome change.

Unless you were to buy an absurdly expensive webcam, there’s a good chance the camera quality of the Android smartphone you already own blows your PC’s webcam out of the water. That’s why many people use their smartphone as a webcam, which is easy to do thanks to third-party webcam apps. With the Android 14 QPR1 update for Pixel phones, Google made it even easier to do this by building USB webcam support right into Android.

While Android’s webcam feature is super convenient to use since it doesn’t involve downloading a specific app, it unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired. When Android Authority’s Dhruv Bhutani tested it against the iPhone Continuity Camera, he was especially disappointed regarding video quality. He said that the video quality when using his Google Pixel 8 Pro as a webcam was “pretty mediocre” and “nowhere near as good as the iPhone.”

  • Google has been using AI to improve global-scale flood forecasting.
  • By training machine learning models, the tech giant was able to accurately predict some floods up to seven days in advance.
  • Google has used its technology to provide accurate flood forecasting in 80 countries.

You may have heard plenty about Google’s various generative AI products like Circle to Search, its AI wallpaper tool, Search Generative Experience (SGE), and more. But you may not have heard nearly as much about the other ways it is using AI, such as predicting floods. Recently, Google was able to accurately predict flooding up to seven days in advance thanks to machine learning (ML).

Today, Google announced it was able to significantly improve global-scale flood forecasting with the help of machine-learning technologies. According to the firm, it was able to improve the reliability of “global nowcasts, on average, from zero to five days.” In some cases, it was even able to predict floods a full week out before they happened.

  • Epic has announced it will launch the Epic Games Store on Android and iOS.
  • It’s unknown when the launch will happen.
  • Epic’s revenue split could undercut the Google Play Store’s revenue split.

Thanks to Epic’s various disputes with Apple, we know full and well that the game publisher intends to launch a store on iOS. But iOS won’t be the only place you’ll find the Epic Games Store. Epic’s marketplace will also bring Fortnite and other games to Android in the near future.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Epic Games Store’s account teased a launch on both iOS and Android. Unfortunately, the post doesn’t elaborate on when the store will arrive on these platforms.

Five 5G Security Concerns: Safeguarding the Future of Connectivity

The advent of 5G technology heralds a new era of connectivity, promising lightning-fast speeds, ultra-low latency, and vast network capacity. While 5G brings unprecedented opportunities for innovation and advancement, it also presents a host of security challenges that must be addressed to ensure a secure digital future. Here are the top five security concerns surrounding 5G technology:

1. Cyberattacks on Critical Infrastructure: With 5G set to underpin critical infrastructure such as power grids, transportation systems, and healthcare facilities, the potential impact of cyberattacks becomes increasingly severe. Threat actors may exploit vulnerabilities in 5G networks to launch attacks targeting vital infrastructure, causing wide-spread disruption and potential harm to public safety.

2. Increased Attack Surface: The proliferation of connected devices in the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, enabled by 5G’s massive device density capabilities, expands the attack surface exponentially. Each connected device represents a potential entry point for cyber threats, ranging from DDoS attacks to data breaches. Securing this vast and diverse array of endpoints presents a considerable challenge for cybersecurity professionals.

3. Supply Chain Vulnerabilities: The global nature of 5G infrastructure deployment introduces supply chain complexities that pose significant security risks. From hardware components to software protocols, every layer of the 5G ecosystem is susceptible to compromise. Supply chain attacks, such as the insertion of malicious components or backdoors during manufacturing or distribution, threaten the integrity and security of 5G networks.

4. Privacy Concerns and Data Protection: The proliferation of high-speed, low-latency connectivity provided by 5G enables the seamless collection and transmission of vast amounts of personal data. Privacy concerns arise regarding the unauthorized access, misuse, or exploitation of sensitive user information by both malicious actors and legitimate service providers. As 5G facilitates the proliferation of IoT devices in various domains, ensuring robust data protection mechanisms becomes paramount to safeguarding user privacy.

5. Emerging Threats from Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies into 5G net-works introduces a new dimension of security challenges. Kate Middleton Medical Record Data was hacked

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, has been undergoing treatment for undisclosed health issues at ‘The London Clinic’ in recent weeks. However, reports from the Daily Mail suggest that hackers or a hacking group attempted to breach the medical data of the Royal Princess, with some staff members suspected of colluding with the cyber criminals.

According to sources, an employee of the private healthcare facility allegedly tried to gain unauthorized access to the medical records of the Princess, particularly concerning her abdominal surgery conducted in January this year.

The extent of the breach remains unclear, but law enforcement authorities involved in the investigation have indicated the possible involvement of a hospital staff member in facilitating the data breach orchestrated by external threat actors.

Hospital authorities are actively investigating the incident and have emphasized that any individuals found to be complicit will face severe consequences. However, it has not been confirmed whether any staff members implicated in the breach were targeted or coerced into participating.

A statement released by Kensington Palace confirmed that Kate Middleton, the wife of Prince William is aware of the cyber incident and reassured the public that the matter is under investigation by The London Clinic.

The Information Commissioner’s Office in Britain has been notified of the breach and is awaiting a comprehensive report from the London police regarding the alleged theft of Kate Middleton’s medical records.

The question arises: what might hackers do with such sensitive information? Possibilities include disseminating misinformation through social media platforms, such as the current trending rumor on Facebook claiming that Kate underwent surgery to remove a cancerous growth from her stomach. Alternatively, stolen medical data could fall into the wrong hands and be exploited for purposes such as identity thefts and blackmail.

Every patient expects and deserves privacy when seeking medical treatment, including confidentiality of doctor-patient consultations and protection of medical records. This fundamental principle of information security applies universally, irrespective of gender, nationality, or social status, and extends to individuals like Ms. Middleton, a member of the Royal Family.

It is hoped that those drawn to sensational celebrity news headlines will recognize the importance of respecting individuals’ privacy and humanity in such matters.

  • Google has removed the “Nearby Places” feature from its Phone app.
  • The feature lets users search for local businesses directly within the Phone app.

Google has officially removed the “Nearby Places” feature from its Phone app. The company announced its intention to do so back in February, citing low usage. At the time, Google stated that “the vast majority of users go to Google Search or Maps” to find business phone numbers.

The “Nearby Places” function allowed users to search for local businesses directly within the phone app. This meant you could quickly find the number for your favorite pizza place or local mechanic right from the dial pad. It seemed like a convenient way to leverage Google Maps’ extensive database within the phone app.

Google is already faltering at its seven year update promise

Security Update Available 2

Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

Seven years of updates, as seen on the Google Pixel 8 and Samsung Galaxy S24 series, should be a stand-out selling point for the latest and greatest smartphones. In theory, it is; the old days of losing the latest Android features just two years after purchase were shameful, and up-to-date security is more important than ever now that we store virtually everything on our phones. However, Google may have bitten off more than it can chew with such long support pledges, especially when tied with the promise of regular Feature Drops.

I’m sure you’ve read that Google’s Pixel 8 is at the center of recent controversy after confirming that Gemini Nano, Google’s compact model to power on-device AI, won’t be coming to the base model after making its way to the more expensive Pixel 8 Pro. That means no AI summaries or smart keyboard replies without the cloud. The reason: unspecified hardware limitations. That’s a double blow, given that Video Boost and other AI doodads were already reserved for the Pro.

A square Galaxy Watch 7 sounds like a great idea, hear me out

Opinion post by
Rita El Khoury

A curious report from Sammobile this week claimed that the Galaxy Watch could go back to its square roots. It’s still a rumor for now, and we’re not sure if this will be the case for the Galaxy Watch 7 or if we have to wait more than a year to see it, but it got me hyped up! Samsung “copying” the Apple Watch design is a very good idea, and I put “copying” between quotes because we all know Apple didn’t invent that shape for smartwatches.
